Hiatus Collective: Opening The Dialogue EXHIBITION OPEN
Hiatus Collective are holding an exhibition in order to open up the dialogue around communication barriers to self-expression and how artistic activities can play a part in demonstrating who you are. We invite the general public, to take a moment, to listen without judgement to those who are diverse in how they communicate.

It is well known that those who are disabled or neurodiverse tend to have an inventive streak. To see the world in a different light is nothing to be stigmatised. Instead Hiatus want to celebrate the gift of expression and artistry, partnering with disability rather than trying to work around it. This exhibition begins this celebration.

The exhibition is a culmination of eleven artist’s work who identify as having communication barriers (disabilities) to self-expression which are out of their control. Artists chose to submit to Hiatus’ first Open Call opportunity, where all disciplines were accepted and encouraged.

All the artists explore different approaches to how their manage their respective barrier or exhibit work which is unrelated, but crucially the opportunity for these individuals to exhibit in an accessible space is important. This an attempt to start a conversation about often unspeakable subjects, as verbal communication may not be the first choice for some.

The curation of the exhibition is carefully considered to cater for as many of the needs of all who may attend. We are sensitive to the sensory needs of neurodiverse individuals, we will make use of PECS, provide written interpretation which is not too detailed but is adequate for the work.

Accessibility: The main exhibition space (Community Hub) and Cafe are completely level accessible. Hiatus and The Canvas Cafe have local links with neighbouring organisations with disabled toilet facilities. Please ask a member of Canvas staff or the Hiatus Team. We will make use of PECS within the gallery space. The lighting in the gallery will be at an appropriate level to cater for those with sensory needs. Exhibition interpretation will be printed on off-white or coloured backing. Large print guides are available. Please email rosie.luck@hiatuscollective.com if you have any accessibility needs that we need to be aware of for you to attend.
